Top Reasons Why Hockey is Better Than Football

NFL

As a hockey fan I have had to put up with people dismissing hockey and the NHL as a “fringe” sport for years. 99% of these people have never watched an NHL game on TV or live. Many NFL fans just bring up fighting as what the NHL is all about and dismiss it for that reason. These are the same people who watch NASCAR for the wrecks. If many of these people went to an NHL game or watched a game on TV, they would be hooked and start wearing Cam Neely jerseys instead of Troy Aikman jerseys.

Here are my top reasons that the NHL is better then the NFL.

Nobody pulls a “Favre” in the NHL.

Sure Mario Lemieux made a comeback after he retired, but he was still young enough to play and was forced to retire the 1st time after his body just was worn down from a hip injury and BEATING CANCER.

Favre just decided to come back after he decided he wanted to keep on playing. He forced a trade to the Jets and held the Green Bay Packers (and those of us who had to hear about what he was doing non-stop every time we turned on ESPN) hostage.

Hockey Uniforms are Much Cooler.

NHL uniforms feature great color schemes (Atlanta not included) and great logos (Tampa Bay not included) while NFL teams wear jerseys that look like something found in the discount kid’s rack at Old Navy. Take a look at the uniforms below:

The Bruins jersey features a classic design, great colors, a great logo and looks good. The Patriots jersey is just bland. It is mainly blue, has a tiny logo and mainly just shows off the number 12.

NFL jerseys also have the number on both sides? An NFL game features about 7 referees on the field while the NHL only has 4. The 7 NFL referees can’t figure out what player is what from just seeing one side of the jersey? Sure there are two times as many players on the field, but I doubt anyone is going to get Tom Brady confused with Randy Moss when trying to call a penalty.

Spandex Pants

NFL players wear skintight pants. Do we really need to see some 350lb guy bending over in spandex pants?

Fans Actually Get to See NHL Games

A NFL team only plays 8 home games a season. If they make the playoffs they can play up to 10 (11 with the Wildcard game). NHL teams play 41 regular home games each season.

Have you ever tried to get a ticket to an NFL game? Very difficult unless you want to pay $500 to sit in section 499 row ZZZ. Sure, the attendance is much larger than an NHL game, but if you have sat in the upper deck, you most likely spent the game watching the Jumbotron. NHL arenas usually seat 15,000-24,000 and provide a better in-person experience.

  1. Hey don’t forget what a drag the NFL instant replay is. Nor the number of games played per season.

Don’t get me wrong, I watch hockey over football any day of the week but Niedermayer AND Selanne both pulled a Farve last year.

And that is why Selanne and Neidermayer both play for the Ducks.

(kills me that franchise won the cup)

Yeah, but Roenick was drunk at the time. Does not count,

  5. I can agree that Hockey in person is the best sport to watch. I’ve been to several of the Canes playoff games over the past few years and they were definitely the most intense sporting events I have ever attended even over some Duke vs UNC basketball games. Heck even during the regular season hockey is great to see live. However regular season hockey on tv versus regular season football on tv is no contest. All 16 games in the NFL count and the NHL some nights are just lackluster making them not worth watching. You don’t get nearly the same effect watching hockey on tv as with NFL which is why more people love the NFL. I can catch at least 6 good games every Sunday with my sunday ticket where as hockey the good games are few and far between. You probably know what I’m saying about the huge difference. However the hockey playoffs on tv, I’m all over it.

Yeah…that Miami Dolphins vs Buffalo Bills game in mid December is gonna be a real thriller.

  7. I agree with the NHL over NFL debate – but nothing beats a good nascar wreck!
NHL games in person are tops though!
