After my post yesterday, I found a few more things happening around the NHL.

  • Sergei Brylin signed a 3-year deal with the KHL
  • Glen Murray was bought out by the Bruins (I updated my post from yesterday with analysis.)
  • The Ducks are looking to deal Mathieu Schneider to clear cap space.  Can’t see many teams giving up too much to obatain a player who is a #5 or #6 defenseman at this point.
  • The Isles are interested in Tortella, Hartley and Trottier as the next head coach.
  • The NHL investigated the Tampa Bay Lightning’s  hiring of Greg Malone as head scout and then the signing of his son, Ryan Malone the next day. (It is going to be fun seeing the new owners run this franchise into the ground.)
  • Even though Tim Thomas made the All Star team last season, is he really a #1 goalie?
  • Can Cam Ward play another 69 start season? He lost a ton of weight prior to last season and started off slow. He ended up with 37 wins and a save percentage of .904, but stumbled a bit down the stretch. The Hurricanes need a back-up who can play 15-20 games and take the wight of Ward so he has some gas left in the tank at the end of the season. The Southeast division is arguably the worst in the NHL and if Ward can win 40 games, the Hurricanes can get into the playoffs easily.

The Jay Bouwmeester situation down in Florida is getting interesting too. He turned down a contract offer rumored to be around 6 years and $36mil from the Panthers and is headed to arbitration on tuesday of this week. He clearly wants out of the Panthers organization. First it was Jokinen and now Bouwmeester. It’s time for the NHL to relocate that franchise. The Panthers know they are going to lose him so he’ll more than likely be dealt before tuesday or at the trade deadline.

I’d love to see Nashville head to Hamilton and Florida head to Winnepeg.

It will be interesting to see where he ends up this season. He’d be a great fit in Pittsburgh, but they would have to send back about equal the salary.

I’m sure the PR goons in Florida will send out a release saying how crappy Bouwmeester was as soon as they deal him like they did with Jokinen.
