Not much news coming out of the NHL right now. The draft and Free Agent frenzy are in the rear view mirror and training camps are still over a month away. Here has what has been happening over the past few weeks.
- Mats Sundin is still weighing his options. Supposedly Vancouver still has a 2 year $20 million offer out to him and Montreal has expressed interest.
- Still no word on Joe Sakic coming back to Colorado for another season.
- Petr Forsberg’s ankles are still bothering him and he will not return to the NHL until December at the earliest.
- Tampa Bay could still be looking to make some moves. Martin St. Louis could be moved prior to the start of the season.
- The Winter Classic will feature Detroit and Chicage at Wrigley this season. Already the rumors are starting for next season. It could be Boston and the Rangers at Fenway Park or the Rangers and Islanders at the New Yankee Stadium.
- The Bruins put Glen Murray on waivers after failing to trade him. It was surprising that they did not buy him out. (Update: They bought him out after he went unclaimed. Murray notched just 30 points in 63 games last season. The season before he had 45 in 59 games, including 28 goals. He could be a decent and cheap addition for a team looking for a player who could score 20 goals with the right linemates.)
- A number of NHL teams will be unveiling 3rd uniforms next season. The teams are: Atlanta, Boston, Buffalo, Carolina, Edmonton, Los Angeles, New York Islanders, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Jose, St. Louis. The Pittsburgh Penguins will most likely unveil their blue uniforms from the Winter Classic as their alternate jersey. It is speculated that the Carolina Hurricanes will go with a black alternate. A few other teams might make minor tweaks tho the uniforms unveiled last season. Most changes are in the form of additional patches or minimal color tweaks.

What does everybody think about the possibility of more than one outdoor game each winter? Understandably, the NHL would want to limit the concept to keep the wow-factor, but with all these cities lining up to host an outdoor winter game, why not do a few each season. NBC does a pretty good job with their Sunday coverage. This seems like a perfect outlet for a few games in outdoor venues.

I’d love to see two each season. Maybe one in Canada and one in the US. I think that the ALL-Star game should be replaced by an outdoor game every other year…or play the game outside.
