He played in an era when goalies actually had to be tough and would pay the price if they strayed from the crease. That cup loss to the Islanders is what allowed Edmonton to win all those cups. They passed by the Isles locker and didn't see them celebrating. They were all iced up and just beaten up physically. Gretzky and co. learned that in the finals you have to score and play physical to win. Goalies are protected now. His aggressive style is something that is needed once again in the NHL, you just look at a goalie and they take their big dive. Billy Smith is one of the greatest goalies ever and furthermore revolutionized how goal is played.
