Rant: Jeff Finger…who?
Tags: NHL Free Agents, Toronto Maple Leafs
What is going on with salaries in the NHL? Well, at least in Toronto. On the first day of the free agent period the Toronto Maple Leafs signed Jeff Finger to a 4 year deal worth $3.5-million a season. That is a $14-million dollar deal. Let’s look at his stats:
94 Games
9 Goals
15 Assists
24 Points.
How is a guy who has played a total of 94 NHL games worth $3.5-million a season? Brooks Orpik signed a deal that is similar with Pittsburgh, but he has proven himself over 297 NHL games. Mike Commodore signed a similar deal. Does anyone even know who Jeff Finger is?
As Josh and I were at work saying who was going where back at each other, we had this exchange:
Josh: Toronto just signed Jeff Finger.
Dan: Who the fuck is Jeff Finger?
Josh: I have no idea. Never heard of him.
Dan: You sure you aren’t reading the baseball signings?
This might be a guy who in four years, we are comparing to Dion Phaneuf or Nicklas Lindstrom….or it could be Ken Klee.

I agree. This guy didn’t even produce at the minor league level. The Leafs overpaid by about $1.5-million for a #6 defenseman. Another bad deal by the Leafs in a string of at least 15.
Great Blog!

Thanks for the reply!
I totally agree…$3.5 is the going rate for a #6 defenseman? They overpaid.

I think they’re trying to increase their likelyhood of landing John Tavares.
However, I think it’d be even funnier if they fell to last, then lost the lottery to Columbus or some other team noone gives a crap about.
Make Me Laffs, indeed.
